Celebrating 80 Years of VE Day at Great Western Arcade

Honouring History, Embracing Community

This 10th May, Great Western Arcade (GWA) invites you to step into a moment of living history as we celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day. From 11AM to 3PM, expect a vibrant blend of nostalgia, performance, and spectacle as Birmingham’s iconic Victorian arcade pays tribute to the resilience, joy, and unity that defined the end of the Second World War.

Why VE Day Matters

Victory in Europe Day marks the formal acceptance of Germany’s unconditional surrender on 8 May 1945. For millions, it was the long-awaited sign that peace had returned to Europe. Streets were filled with cheers, embraces, and music. Today, VE Day continues to symbolise freedom, resilience, and hope, values that are deeply woven into the very fabric of GWA.

Wartime Resilience: GWA’s WWII Story

Nestled in the heart of Birmingham since 1876, Great Western Arcade has witnessed both celebration and conflict. During the Second World War, the arcade endured significant hardship. Air raids in the 1940s caused the destruction of its glass roof, drastically altering its Victorian silhouette. Yet, like the city around it, GWA endured. Rebuilt with determination, it emerged post-war as a beacon of renewal and community.

Step Into the Celebration: What to Expect on 10th May

  • The Miniature Tank Experience: Watch out for a 200kg mobile marvel packed with humour, sound effects, and a working confetti cannon. Crewed by the whimsical “Who’s Army” duo, this tank is ready to roll in some unforgettable fun.
  • Great Britain Stilt Walkers: Keep your eyes to the skies as these elegantly patriotic performers roam the arcade, offering a perfect photo opportunity and handing out themed giveaways.
  • Live Entertainment: The atmosphere will be full of joy and nostalgia.
  • Family-Friendly Fun: With free giveaways and engaging acts throughout the arcade, it’s a celebration designed for all ages.

A Venue Steeped in History

GWA isn’t just a place to shop, it’s a place to connect with history. Through a dedicated timeline display, visitors this May can journey through the decades: from its 19th-century opening, to surviving the Blitz, to thriving again in the 2020s. It’s more than an event—it’s a reflection of how far we’ve come.
